Volvo Beginnings
Volvo began manufacturing cars more than 90 years ago, and the vehicles produced by this Swedish brand were noted for their superior construction, safety, and practicality. The first luxury vehicle that Volvo produced was the PV 654, which was released in 1933. It offered an upgraded interior and it was powered by a 3.67L six-cylinder engine that delivered 80 to 84 hp.
Becoming the Luxury Car Brand of Today
The transition between making Volvo luxury car models and more practical models took some years to complete.
In the 1980s, Volvo produced the 760, a boxy sedan without much flair. In 1990, the 960 replaced the 760 and offered a sleeker sedan with a new 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine. This vehicle would serve as the basis for the Volvo S90. In 2006, the S90 was replaced as the flagship luxury vehicle by the second-generation S80 and would stay at the top of the lineup for about 10 years until the 2017 S90 was released.

One of the Top 10 Luxury Brands in 2019
The Swedish automaker, which is now owned by Ford, was even named one of the top 10 best luxury brands for 2019 by U.S. News & World Report. The review noted the "award-winning designs, cutting-edge technology, and family of punchy four-cylinder engines," and went on to say that the "elegant styling of its vehicles - both inside and out - is a major key to Volvo's success."
